Revised Required Homework Schedule for MATH 131, Fall 2008

The homework listed below will be collected in class at the beginning of lecture on the date listed. This is a subset of the longer list we had for Homework Quizzes. These will be weighted the same as the Homework Quizzes. All that is really changing is the format in which we are collecting the homework. For the remainder of the semester I expect you to complete the homework outside of class. ( this was always expected, but in practice it seems many people were not devoting enough time to homework before class )

It should be almost universally true that I will lecture about the material at least a day or two before it is due. If you identify that a particular problem seems to not be connected to any of the lectures before the due date then you should ask me about it. It could be that you missed the point of some part of lecture, or perhaps I overlooked all that was needed for a particular problem. Please contact me as soon as you have such a concern so I can help.

One more thing, since the homeworks have on the average been very sloppy in their presentation I am going to ask the grader that he make 20% of each homework based on presentation. If yours is neat then you get a 20% even if its all wrong. On the other hand if you just scribble the answer without attention to communicating your thought process then you will get a maximum of 80 on the homework. I'd rather not discuss such things, but improvement is required if we are to be sucessful in communicating mathematics effectively in the long term. Its great that you can see the answer, but it would be even greater if you could say why you see it that way.

These assignments are listed in chronological order of due dates. Sometimes I revisit the homework from a particular section multiple times. Usually if that happens that indicates the section in question is important.

Please indicate both number and section on each problem. At the top of the homework write which assignment it is (for example "Homework 10") Thanks.
